Spring is here — and summer is right behind it.
The shops that are ready will run efficiently. The ones that aren't will lose time and money when they can least afford it.
Here are five things every shop should check now — before the heat and volume hit at once.
1. Your A/C Machine Is Probably Overdue
This is the one most shops put off — and the one that creates the most pain come June.
If your A/C machine hasn't been serviced since last summer, there's a good chance it's due. Clogged filters, worn seals, and uncalibrated sensors slow down your A/C jobs and can cause inaccurate refrigerant charges that lead to callbacks.
Check for:
- Slower-than-normal recovery or recharge times
- Oil or moisture contamination in the system
- Cracked hoses or refrigerant leaks
- Sensor alerts or calibration errors
The Mahle ArcticPRO® ACX Maintenance Kit is the easiest way to handle preventive maintenance in one shot — filters, gaskets, and oil cartridges included.
Don't wait until you're turning customers away on a 100-degree day.
2. Inspect Your Lifts Before They Become a Liability
Lifts are the backbone of your shop. They run hard, they take abuse, and they rarely get the inspection attention they deserve until something goes wrong.
Spring is the right time to do a full inspection before your bay count is maxed out.
Check for:
- Worn or cracked hydraulic hoses
- Slack or frayed lift cables (2-post lifts)
- Arm or carriage play or binding
- Safety lock engagement — does it catch and hold cleanly?
- Visible rust or corrosion on load-bearing components
- Floor anchor integrity
If a lift is questionable, take it out of rotation now. A lift failure mid-repair is a liability, a delay, and a safety event all at once.
If you're running aging or underperforming lifts, this is also the time to evaluate a replacement before summer demand makes scheduling an install harder. Alamo installs and services lifts across the DFW area and beyond.
3. Y our Air Compressor Runs Everything — Don't Ignore It
Your air compressor runs everything. And like most equipment that runs constantly in the background, it's easy to ignore until it fails.
Spring service checklist:
- Drain moisture from the tank (if not auto-draining)
- Replace the air filter element
- Check belt tension and condition (belt-drive units)
- Inspect all air lines and fittings for leaks
- Verify the pressure switch and unloader valve are functioning correctly
- Check oil level and condition (oil-lubricated units)
A compressor failure on a busy summer day means air tools down, spray equipment down, and a shop that grinds to a halt. A 30-minute spring inspection prevents most of those scenarios.
If your compressor is aging out or undersized for your current bay count, now is the time to spec a replacement — not in July when install scheduling is backed up. We carry a full line of compressors and can help you right-size for your shop.
4. A Miscalibrated Alignment Machine Is Worse Than None
Wheel alignment work picks up in spring as customers come in after winter roads, pothole season, and winter tire swaps. If your alignment machine hasn't been calibrated recently, you're working with faulty data.
Check for:
- Calibration status — when was it last certified?
- Turntable and slip plate condition
- Software updates pending
- Sensor arm wear or play
- Head-to-head communication errors
A misaligned alignment machine is worse than no alignment machine — because you're charging customers for work that isn't right. Spring is the time to get this sorted before the rush.
5. Walk Your Shop Like You've Never Seen It Before
This sounds obvious, but it rarely happens with intention.
Set aside 30 minutes and walk your entire shop with fresh eyes. Look for:
- Equipment that's been pushed aside because it "acts funny" — identify and address it or remove it
- Extension cords or air lines creating trip/fall hazards
- Lighting that's dim or failing in work areas
- Anything leaking that's been tolerated too long
- Storage that's crept into the aisle or bay space
Summer doesn't care that your bay is half blocked or that one lift is 'usually fine.' Every workaround your team has learned to live with becomes a real problem at 110% capacity. Fix it now, while you still have the time to fix it on your terms.
