Fluid Storage

When a shop uses roughly 50 to 80 gallons per month of any one fluid, the per-gallon cost savings from bulk delivery (vs. 55-gallon drum delivery) typically justify a bulk storage investment within 18 to 24 months. Lower volumes can stay on drums economically; higher volumes save significant fluid cost annually.

Common sizes are 120-gallon, 240-gallon, 480-gallon, and 1,000-gallon, with both vertical and horizontal configurations. Tank sizing should match monthly fluid throughput — too small means frequent refills, too large ties up capital and may exceed local code thresholds for above-ground tank permits.

Multi-fluid systems combine several smaller tanks (typically 120 to 240 gallons each) into a single chassis with shared fill manifolds. They allow a shop to bulk-store oil, ATF, antifreeze, and gear oil in one footprint rather than separate stand-alone tanks. Common in mid-size dealership lube bays.

Local fire codes and EPA regulations apply to above-ground petroleum storage above certain thresholds — typically 660 gallons under federal SPCC rules and lower thresholds in some states and municipalities. Check with the local fire marshal and EPA spill prevention requirements before installing tanks at or above these capacities.

Most bulk fluid tanks above 55 gallons should have secondary containment — typically a containment pan rated for 110 percent of the tank volume. This catches leaks and accidental spills, both for environmental compliance and bay safety. UltraTech and similar containment products are stocked for shop installations.

Sometimes, when shops are co-located or share a building. Most independent shops are individually metered for fluid delivery. Coordination on shared bulk fluid is a business arrangement between the shops and the fluid supplier — Alamo can recommend storage configurations for any scenario.

Keep tanks sealed against contamination, install inlet filters on fill ports, and rotate fluid stock so older deliveries are used before newer. Most modern shop oils have shelf lives of 3 to 5 years in sealed bulk storage — actual turn in a busy shop is far faster than shelf life. Test fluid periodically if storage extends beyond 12 months.

Drum dollies are wheeled platforms for moving 55-gallon drums around the shop. Drum stands hold drums upright and at a convenient dispensing height with secured straps. Both reduce ergonomic risk and improve work efficiency in shops not yet at bulk storage scale.
