Basic computerized balancers measure imbalance and indicate weight placement. Hoods are a safety feature that contains the wheel if something releases during a spin, and many machines require the hood down to run. For a shop balancing customer wheels routinely, a hood is standard practice.
Rim diameter and width range varies by model, as does maximum wheel weight. Confirm the specific machine's range against what you service, particularly for large-diameter and heavy truck wheels. Large-diameter truck wheels are the range most commonly underspecified.
