HVLS stands for high volume, low speed. These are large-diameter fans that move a large air volume slowly, creating gentle air movement across a wide area rather than a concentrated high-velocity stream from a small fan.

A single HVLS fan covers a large floor area with even air movement, using less energy than the multiple high-speed fans needed to cover the same area. It also avoids the noise and localized drafts of high-velocity fans, which matters in a working shop.

In heated spaces, warm air stratifies at the ceiling. Running an HVLS fan slowly in winter mixes that air back down, which improves comfort at floor level and can reduce heating cost. This destratification benefit is a significant part of the case for them.

Large diameter fans require adequate mounting height for safe clearance and effective air movement, and the building structure must support the fan's weight and dynamic loading.
