Blasting cabinets are used for cleaning automotive parts — removing rust, scale, old paint, carbon deposits, and surface contamination from brake calipers, wheel hubs, brackets, engine components, and small assemblies. The enclosed cabinet contains the abrasive media and debris, protecting the shop environment while delivering controlled blasting pressure to parts placed through the glove ports.
Suction blast cabinets use compressed air to create a venturi effect that draws abrasive media from the bottom reservoir and carries it to the blast gun — simpler, lower cost, best for light cleaning and detail work. Pressure blast cabinets use a pressurized media vessel to deliver abrasive at much higher velocity — faster cleaning, better for heavy rust removal, thick coatings, and harder materials.
Common abrasive media for automotive shop blast cabinets includes steel shot, glass bead, aluminum oxide, plastic media, and walnut shell or corn cob for softer surfaces. Glass bead produces a bright, smooth finish suitable for aluminum components. Aluminum oxide is more aggressive for rust and scale removal. Plastic media is used for fiberglass and painted surfaces where metal removal is not wanted.
Most shop blast cabinets in this collection handle small to medium automotive parts — brake calipers, rotors, bearings, brackets, carburetors, valve covers, small exhaust components, and similar items. Cabinet working dimensions vary by model. For very large components like entire engine blocks or frames, larger industrial cabinet configurations or outdoor blasting are required.
Suction blast cabinets typically require 5 to 10 CFM at 80 to 100 PSI for effective operation. Pressure blast cabinets require more air — typically 15 to 25 CFM or more at 90 to 110 PSI for full blast performance. Confirm your compressor CFM output at operating pressure against the cabinet's requirement before purchasing to ensure adequate blast performance.
Most blast cabinets include an internal dust collection system — either a bag filter or a cartridge filter — that separates fine dust from the recycled media. For high-volume use or fine media, an external dust collector can improve cabinet visibility and extend internal filter service life. Proper dust collection also reduces operator exposure to airborne abrasive dust.
Media should be periodically sifted to remove broken-down fines and contamination — degraded media loses blasting effectiveness and clogs the cabinet system. Inspect the media level and quality every 30 to 60 days in regular use. Replace depleted media with the same type and grade. Keep the cabinet sealed when not in use to prevent media from absorbing moisture, which causes clumping and flow problems.
