Aftercoolers are the first line of defense in compressed air moisture control, cooling hot discharge air before it reaches treatment equipment and production tools.
An aftercooler cools compressed air immediately after it leaves the compressor discharge, lowering the air temperature and condensing a large portion of its moisture. The condensed water is then separated and drained before the air continues downstream to dryers, filters, and tools. Removing moisture early protects downstream equipment and significantly extends air dryer service life.
Air-cooled aftercoolers use ambient shop air drawn across a finned heat exchanger — simpler to install with no plumbing required. Water-cooled aftercoolers circulate facility water through the heat exchanger
for more efficient cooling in high-ambient or high-duty-cycle environments. Water-cooled models achieve lower outlet temperatures but require water supply and drain connections on site.
Most rotary screw compressors ship with an integrated aftercooler. Reciprocating piston compressors generally do not — an external aftercooler is strongly recommended for any piston compressor driving air tools, spray painting, or moisture-sensitive downstream processes. Without an aftercooler, air dryers receive hot, wet discharge air and operate much less efficiently, reducing element service life.
Air-cooled aftercoolers typically deliver air within 15 to 25 degrees F of ambient temperature — called the approach temperature. Water-cooled models can achieve within 5 to 10 degrees F of cooling water temperature. Lower outlet temperatures mean more moisture condenses before the dryer, reducing the dryer load and improving overall air quality throughout the distribution system.
Match the aftercooler CFM rating to your compressor's maximum discharge CFM at operating pressure. Undersizing causes poor cooling and reduces moisture removal effectiveness. Also match connection size to the compressor discharge outlet. No. An aftercooler removes bulk moisture but does not dry air to the dew point required for tools and production equipment. A refrigerated or desiccant air dryer is still required after the aftercooler. The aftercooler reduces the moisture load the dryer must handle, improving dryer efficiency and extending filter element service intervals considerably.
Air-cooled aftercooler fins should be cleaned every 6 to 12 months depending on shop environment — dust, oil mist, and debris clog fins and reduce cooling efficiency. The condensate separator and drain valve downstream should be checked monthly. Water-cooled models require periodic scale treatment and water circuit inspection to maintain heat transfer performance.
