Hose and nozzles see the most frequent replacement as they are the wear-exposed components.

Inspect hoses monthly for cracks, holes, charred sections from hot exhaust contact, and crushed areas. Replace at the first sign of failure. Heavy-use bays typically replace hoses every 18 to 36 months; lighter-use bays can extend to 4 to 5 years. A compromised hose leaks exhaust into the shop and defeats the system's purpose.

Hose diameter and end-fitting connection vary by manufacturer. Mahle hoses fit Mahle systems specifically; other brand systems require their own matched components. Verify hose ID, OD, and end-fitting style before ordering.

Rubber hose handles standard ambient and exhaust temperatures from passenger and light-duty vehicles. Silicone hose handles higher exhaust temperatures from diesel and high-output vehicles without degrading. Match hose material to your service population — running rubber on continuous diesel service shortens hose life significantly.

Most Mahle capture nozzles fit common round and oval tailpipe sizes. Diesel pickup dual exhaust, performance vehicle tip configurations, and some commercial vehicles may require specialty nozzles or universal clamp-on designs. Verify against your service population.

Annual inspection of fan blade balance, motor bearing condition, and belt tension (on belt-drive units). Clean fan housing interior of accumulated soot every 6 to 12 months. A fan running below design CFM allows exhaust contamination to reach breathing zones — make this a scheduled PM item.

Most Mahle hose reels can be field-serviced — spring assemblies, swivel seals, and roller bearings are stocked as replacement components. Replace damaged reels only when the structural frame is bent or cracked. Springs are the most common service item, typically lasting 5 to 10 years of daily use.

OSHA Permissible Exposure Limits for carbon monoxide (50 ppm 8-hour TWA) and diesel particulate matter are routinely exceeded in unventilated service bays where vehicles are run indoors. Effective vehicle exhaust extraction is the primary engineering control. Service bays without functional extraction expose technicians to documented health hazards and create compliance liability.
