A/C Service Equipment FAQs

Professional automotive A/C service equipment for refrigerant recovery, recycling, and recharge — R-134a and R-1234yf recovery, recycling, and recharge machines, refrigerant identifiers, vacuum stations, and electronic leak detection equipment from Mahle.

A production A/C service bay requires a recovery/recycle/recharge machine (separate units for R-134a and R-1234yf if servicing both), a refrigerant identifier to detect contaminated or incorrect refrigerant before service, a vacuum pump or dedicated vacuum station, and leak detection equipment. High-volume shops may also need accessories for refrigerant storage and handling.

R-134a and R-1234yf are different refrigerants requiring separate, dedicated service machines. R-1234yf machines must meet SAE J2843 certification and include additional safety features for the refrigerant's A2L (mildly flammable) classification. Shops now servicing newer vehicles require dedicated R-1234yf equipment — an R-134a machine cannot legally or safely service R-1234yf systems.

Alamo Equipment is an authorized Mahle dealer. Mahle ACX-series equipment covers R-134a and R-1234yf recovery, recycling, and recharging for production shop use. Mahle is among the leading brands in professional automotive A/C service equipment for dealerships and independent service centers.

Refrigerant identification involves testing the refrigerant in a vehicle's A/C system before service to confirm it is the correct type and is not contaminated or blended with incompatible refrigerants. Cross-contaminated systems can damage A/C service machines, cause recovery failures, and create safety hazards. Identification is best practice before every service.

Yes. EPA Section 609 requires that technicians who purchase refrigerants in containers larger than 2 lbs and handle automotive A/C systems be certified. Shops must use certified recovery equipment and are prohibited from intentionally venting refrigerants. Both R-134a and R-1234yf are covered under these regulations.

Professional A/C service machines require periodic oil changes, filter replacements, desiccant bag replacement, and annual calibration or certification depending on the machine type and regulatory requirements. Mahle machines include maintenance interval indicators. Alamo Equipment stocks
maintenance parts and can advise on service schedules.

If your shop services vehicles from 2020 and newer, most will have R-1234yf systems — you need a certified R-1234yf machine. For mixed fleets servicing older vehicles, you will need both an R-134a machine and a separate R-1234yf machine. Combining both functions into a dual-refrigerant
machine is available in some Mahle platforms.
