When there is no electrical service where the air is needed — mobile service trucks, remote jobsites, fleet yard work, and outdoor construction. If reliable electrical power is available, an electric compressor is quieter, cheaper to run, and requires less maintenance.

A small group of Atlas gas-drive units, including engine-driven models built around Honda engines, plus an FS-Curtis gas unit. These are intended for portable and mobile duty rather than as a fixed shop air source.

Not as a rule. Gasoline engines produce carbon monoxide and must be operated outdoors or with engineered exhaust extraction to the outside. Running one inside a closed shop is a serious safety hazard. If the unit must operate in a bay, use a dedicated exhaust extraction system.

You maintain both the engine and the compressor pump. That adds engine oil changes, spark plug and air filter service, fuel system care, and off-season fuel stabilization or draining, on top of normal pump oil and receiver draining. Plan on meaningfully more scheduled maintenance than an electric unit.

Output scales with engine horsepower and pump size. Confirm the rated CFM at your working pressure on the specific model against the tools you intend to run. Gas units are commonly sized for one or two tools at a time rather than a full multi-bay air demand.

Truck and trailer mounting is a common application for units in this class, but mounting method, vibration isolation, fuel line routing, and securement are the installer's responsibility and must comply with vehicle and DOT requirements. Confirm the specific unit's mounting provisions before planning a truck installation.

Use fresh fuel and follow the engine manufacturer's octane and ethanol guidance. For seasonal use, either run the unit regularly or stabilize the fuel — stale fuel in the carburetor is the most common cause of hard starting on gas compressors that sit.
