Two-stage arms telescope in two sections, so they extend and retract over a defined reach range. They are the common arm configuration on many two-post lifts and cover the majority of passenger car and light truck lift point positions.

Three-stage arms add a third telescoping section, giving greater reach range — shorter when fully retracted and longer when fully extended. That extra range helps on both very short-wheelbase vehicles and long trucks. Two-stage arms are simpler and cover the common range.

For most passenger cars and light trucks, yes. Vehicles with unusually short wheelbases or very long frames can fall outside a two-stage arm's reach. If your service mix includes both compact cars and long-bed trucks, three-stage arms give more coverage.

Arm assemblies are matched to the specific lift model and carriage. Some manufacturers offer alternative arm configurations, but this is not universally available and is not a simple swap. Confirm arm options at the time of purchase rather than planning to change later.

Most lifts include a set of standard pads. Vehicles with pinch weld or frame designs requiring extra height or a specific contact shape need adapters, sold separately in the lift pads and adapters collection. Confirm what is included with the specific lift.

Inspect arm restraint mechanisms for correct engagement, check pads for wear and replace them when the contact surface is degraded, and look for any deformation. Arm restraints are a safety system — if one is not engaging properly, the lift should be taken out of service until repaired.
