CCD alignment systems use electronic sensors in the alignment heads to measure wheel angles via direct sensor-to-sensor communication — well-proven, highly accurate technology. Camera-based systems use cameras to measure targets placed on the wheels, eliminating cables between heads. Camera systems are generally faster to set up but require a clear line of sight between the camera and all four targets.

3D alignment systems use camera arrays to capture wheel-mounted target positions in three-dimensional space, computing all four wheel angles simultaneously without the vehicle needing to roll through a runout compensation cycle. Traditional systems require a roll-back measurement. 3D systems are faster, require less approach space, and eliminate the runout compensation step from the workflow.

Hofmann alignment systems cover passenger cars, crossovers, light trucks, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles as standard capability. Commercial vehicle and heavy truck adaptor packages are available for vans, medium-duty trucks, and buses. Alignment systems are designed to work with scissor alignment lifts and 4-post alignment lifts that include turn plates and rear slip plates. The lift must provide a flat, level runway and clear wheel access for alignment targets or cameras. Hofmann systems are compatible with all major alignment lift brands including Challenger, APlusLift, and other brands Alamo Equipment carries.

A typical shop alignment system installation takes one to two days — one day for lift positioning and electrical preparation, one day for alignment system hardware installation and initial calibration. Alignment systems require periodic calibration verification at least annually, sensor head and cable inspection, rim clamp and turn plate replacement as they wear, and software updates to maintain vehicle coverage for new model year vehicles. Entry-level systems suit 1 to 3 alignments per day with standard passenger car and light truck coverage. Production-grade systems are built for 5 or more alignments per day, offer faster setup time, broader vehicle coverage, ADAS integration capability, and faster data processing.
