Yes, if the air contacts anything sensitive. Even light-duty compressors produce saturated discharge air. A minimum of moisture separation and filtration should be fitted; refrigerated drying is appropriate where the air must stay dry through the distribution piping.
Drain the tank daily, change pump oil and inlet filter at the stated interval, and inspect belts on belt-drive models. On duplex units, confirm both pumps are running and alternating correctly — a failed pump on a duplex can go unnoticed because the other one keeps supplying air.
