Two-Stage Compressors FAQs

A single-stage compressor compresses air to final pressure in one piston stroke. A two-stage compressor compresses in two steps with intercooling between them, which runs cooler and more efficiently at higher pressures. Two-stage units are the standard choice for continuous shop duty above roughly 100 PSI.

Because most shop air tools are rated at 90 PSI at the tool and system losses mean the compressor typically needs to deliver 120 to 175 PSI. Single-stage units lose efficiency and run hot at that range. Two-stage units handle it at lower discharge temperature, which extends pump life and reduces moisture carryover.

This collection includes Atlas and FS-Curtis two-stage units broadly spanning 5 HP through 30 HP on receivers from 60 to 240 gallons. Both single-phase and three-phase motor configurations appear in the range, with single-phase generally limited to the smaller horsepower sizes.

Total the CFM draw of every tool that may run simultaneously, then add roughly 25 percent headroom for demand spikes. As rough guides: impact wrench 4 to 8 CFM, air ratchet 4 to 6 CFM, tire inflator 1 to 5 CFM, spray gun 10 to 25 CFM. Alamo can run the calculation against your specific tool list.

Receiver size buffers demand spikes rather than adding capacity. A larger tank lets the compressor cycle less often under intermittent load, which reduces motor starts and wear. For most shops an 80 to 120 gallon receiver pairs well with 10 to 15 HP; 240 gallon receivers pair with 20 HP and above.

At minimum an aftercooler to drop discharge temperature, a refrigerated dryer to remove moisture, and a coalescing filter to catch oil aerosol. Two-stage units still discharge hot saturated air — without treatment that moisture condenses in the shop piping and reaches the tools.

Reciprocating compressors are generally rated for intermittent duty, commonly in the range of 50 to 75 percent, meaning they need off time to cool. If your air demand is genuinely continuous, a rotary screw is the correct machine. Running a reciprocating unit at continuous duty shortens pump life significantly.

Not without provisions. Condensate freezing, cold-start oil viscosity, and weather exposure all cause problems. If the compressor must sit in an unheated area, the space needs to stay above freezing and the unit needs protection from direct weather. Discuss the installation environment before selecting a model.
